Where can I hire a boat in Potter Heigham?
Unsurprisingly for a village with a long boating history and a location at the heart of the Norfolk Broads, there’s a number of businesses offering boat hire in Potter Heigham. Potter Heigham has navigational access to Hickling Broads, Heigham Sounds, Horsey Mere and Martham Broad. We are home to the famous medieval Potter Heigham Bridge which is notoriously difficult to navigate through. It is so low that the majority of boats won’t get through. This prevents our stretch of the River Thurne up to Hickling Broad and Horsey from being accessed by larger boats. To explore this the waters beyond the bridge or other Broads, hire a boat for a day or two from Potter Heigham. You can even moor up outside our cottage!
Phoenix Fleet
Phoenix Fleet Ltd are located on the south side of the river by the bridge. They are a friendly, helpful company renting out day boats and are open 7 days a week from 9am to 5 pm. You can hire a boat by the hour or for the day or by the week. There are a choice of electric 3, 6 or 12 seaters or a diesel 6 seater. Their electric boats are better for the environment as there is less pollution and vibration. Cruising the river in an electric boat limits disturbance to the wildlife and their habitats. It’s also lovely and peaceful with no diesel engine noise. Mention you are staying at Sunray when booking and you will receive a discount (offer not availale for boat hire in July or August).
Herbert Woods
Herbert Woods hire both day boats and cruisers for boating holidays out of Potter Heigham. They have day boats seating up to 8 people, picnic boats (with toilet!) seating up to 9, fishing boats and even canoes and kayaks to hire by the day. If you want a longer cruise on the Norfolk Broads they also have a variety of cruisers for hire. Day boats and picnic boats cannot be booked in advance, they are allocated on a first-come-first basis. Day boats can be hired by the hour and picnic boats by the day only.
Maycraft Cruisers
Just down the river from Sunray is Maycraft Cruisers boatyard in Potter Heigham. This family run boatyard was started by Billy May, builder of the famous Cromer crab boats, and has been operating for over 50 years. They hire day cruisers equipped with cooker, fridge, sink and toilet seating up to 12 people by the day. The canopy can slide back so you can enjoy the sunshine in good weather. Fishing boats are just £30 a day. You can hire a day cruiser or fishing boat by the day or by the week. Book in advance. You can also hire lovely little cruisers sleeping 2 for short breaks or week long hires.
Martham Ferry Dayboat Hire
Just up the river in Martham you can hire electric day boats (seating 6), picnic boats either seating 8 or 12 from Martham Ferry Boatyard. The 12 seaters have a roof that slides back and they both have hobs, fridges, sinks and toilets. They also hire out Seastrike fishing boats from September to March for £90 a day. The boats are kitted out with rod holders, a drivers seat, a fish mat, cradle and a front canopy.
